The Spirit of Truth Will Testify
Where We Are
Alleluia! Monday of the Sixth Week of Easter continues to prepare us for the Ascension and Pentecost, now just two weeks away. Yesterday's Sunday readings promised the Advocate who would not leave us orphans. Today, Jesus names the Advocate more precisely: the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father and will testify about Jesus. He also warns the disciples that persecution lies ahead. In Acts, Paul arrives in Philippi, where God opens the heart of Lydia, a seller of purple cloth, to receive the Gospel. A new church begins in the most unexpected way: by a river, among women at prayer.
The Word
Jesus introduces the Spirit of Truth as one who "proceeds from the Father" and whose primary mission is to testify about Jesus (John 15:26). The disciples, too, will bear witness, because they have been with Jesus from the beginning. But Jesus adds a difficult word: people will expel them from synagogues, and some will even believe that killing them is an act of service to God. "They will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me." Jesus tells them this now so that when it happens, they will remember and not lose heart.

Reflect
The Spirit of Truth does not testify in a vacuum. He works through human witnesses. Jesus connects the Spirit's testimony directly to the disciples' testimony: "And you also shall give testimony." The Spirit empowers; the disciples speak. This partnership between divine power and human courage is the engine of the Church's mission.
Lydia's story in Acts is a beautiful illustration. Paul goes to Philippi with no contacts, no synagogue, no obvious starting point. He finds a group of women praying by a river and simply speaks. The text says, "The Lord opened her heart to be receptive to what Paul was saying." This is the Spirit of Truth at work: softening soil, opening hearts, preparing the ground before the seed is even planted.
Lydia is a businesswoman, a dealer in expensive purple dye, likely a Gentile "God-fearer" who worshiped Israel's God without full conversion. She represents the growing edge of the Church: people the establishment did not expect, reached in places the establishment did not look. The Spirit of Truth is not confined to temples and synagogues. He works by rivers, in marketplaces, in the quiet receptivity of an open heart.
Jesus's warning about persecution is sobering but realistic. Some of the worst suffering comes from people who believe they are serving God. Religious violence is especially painful because it wears the mask of devotion. But the Spirit of Truth strips away those masks, revealing the Father as he truly is: a God of love, not coercion.
Living It
Ask the Holy Spirit to open one person's heart today, the way he opened Lydia's. You do not need to preach a sermon. Simply be attentive to moments when someone seems receptive to a word of encouragement or hope.
If you have experienced hurt from religious institutions or people acting "in God's name," bring that wound to the Spirit of Truth today. Ask him to heal the distortion and reveal the Father's true face.
Pray for the Church in places where believers face persecution for their faith. Their witness, empowered by the Spirit, continues to testify to the truth of the Gospel.
Prayer
Come, Spirit of Truth, and testify within us. Open our hearts as you opened Lydia's. Give us courage to speak when you prompt us and wisdom to be silent when you lead us to listen. Protect those who suffer for their faith, and reveal the Father's true face to all who seek him. Amen.
