Sheep Without a Shepherd

Where We Are

Tuesday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Matthew shows us Jesus encountering a mute man possessed by a demon, casting it out, and facing criticism from the Pharisees who attribute his power to the devil. Then Matthew pulls back to show us the wider picture: Jesus traveling through every city and town, teaching, preaching, and healing. And what he sees breaks his heart. The prophet Hosea warns about the consequences of false worship.

The Word

After healing the mute man, the crowds are amazed: "Never has anything like this been seen in Israel." But the Pharisees sneer: "By the prince of demons does he cast out demons." Undeterred, Jesus continues his ministry across the land. "And seeing the crowds, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were distressed and lying prostrate, like sheep without a shepherd" (Matthew 9:36). He tells his disciples: "The harvest indeed is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest."
