Freely You Have Received

Where We Are

Thursday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time. Jesus continues commissioning the Twelve, giving them detailed instructions for their mission. Yesterday he named them and gave them authority. Today he tells them how to use it: freely, without payment, without provisions, and with total dependence on God's hospitality through others. The mission is radical in its simplicity. The prophet Hosea provides one of the Old Testament's most tender images of God's love, describing the Lord as a parent who taught Israel to walk.

The Word

"Cure the infirm, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You have received freely, so give freely" (Matthew 10:8). Jesus then tells them to travel light: no gold, no silver, no extra clothing, no provisions. They are to depend entirely on the hospitality of those who welcome them. If a town receives them, they leave their peace upon it. If it rejects them, they shake the dust from their feet and move on. The mission is not about accumulation; it is about giving away what has been given. The disciples' poverty becomes their credibility, proof that the kingdom they proclaim is not for sale.

Reflect

"You have received freely, so give freely" is the economic principle of the kingdom of God. Grace cannot be monetized. The gifts of God, healing, deliverance, forgiveness, are not services for sale. They are gifts to be passed on. The moment we start charging for grace, we have stopped distributing grace.

The instruction to travel without provisions is not asceticism for its own sake. It is training in trust. When you have no backup plan, you learn to depend on God moment by moment. You also learn to depend on the community, the people who feed you, house you, and support you. Ministry is not a solo enterprise; it is a partnership between the one who goes and the ones who welcome.

Hosea 11 gives us God speaking as a parent: "When Israel was a child, I loved him. I taught Ephraim to walk, taking them up in my arms. I drew them with cords of love." God's mission to the world is not a corporate project; it is a parent's love, intimate, personal, and freely given. The Twelve are sent out in the same spirit.

The instruction about shaking dust from their feet teaches an important lesson: not everyone will receive the message. This is not a failure; it is a reality. The disciples are responsible for the giving; they are not responsible for the receiving.

Living It

Identify one gift, talent, or blessing you have received freely from God. Give it away to someone today without expecting anything in return. The gift does not need to be dramatic; sometimes the most powerful generosity is quiet and ordinary.

Practice traveling light. Not literally (unless you want to), but spiritually. Let go of one thing you are clutching for security and trust God to provide. Notice how freedom feels when you loosen your grip.

If your message, your love, your help has been rejected by someone, shake the dust from your feet with grace. You are responsible for the giving. God is responsible for the receiving.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, everything we have is a gift from you. Teach us to give freely what we have freely received. Strip away our need for security and control, and fill us with trust. When we are welcomed, let us bring peace. When we are rejected, let us move on with grace. Amen.
