Wise as Serpents, Gentle as Doves

Where We Are

Friday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time. Jesus continues preparing the Twelve for their mission, and the tone becomes sober. He warns them about persecution: they will be handed over to councils, scourged in synagogues, and brought before rulers. But they are not to prepare speeches; the Holy Spirit will speak through them. The prophet Hosea concludes with a call to return to God and find healing.

The Word

"Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be as prudent as serpents and as simple as doves" (Matthew 10:16). Jesus warns of arrests, floggings, and family betrayal. Brother will hand over brother, and father will betray child. "You will be hated by all because of my name. But whoever will have persevered until the end, the same shall be saved." When persecuted in one city, flee to the next. "You shall not have gone through all of the cities of Israel, before the Son of man returns."
