Wise as Serpents, Gentle as Doves

Where We Are

Friday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time. Jesus continues preparing the Twelve for their mission, and the tone becomes sober. He warns them about persecution: they will be handed over to councils, scourged in synagogues, and brought before rulers. But they are not to prepare speeches; the Holy Spirit will speak through them. The prophet Hosea concludes with a call to return to God and find healing.

The Word

"Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be as prudent as serpents and as simple as doves" (Matthew 10:16). Jesus warns of arrests, floggings, and family betrayal. Brother will hand over brother, and father will betray child. "You will be hated by all because of my name. But whoever will have persevered until the end, the same shall be saved." When persecuted in one city, flee to the next. "You shall not have gone through all of the cities of Israel, before the Son of man returns."

Reflect

The combination of serpent wisdom and dove innocence is Jesus's formula for navigating a hostile world. Pure innocence without wisdom is naive and gets trampled. Pure shrewdness without innocence is manipulative and loses its soul. Christians are called to be both: street-smart and pure-hearted, strategic and transparent.

The promise that the Holy Spirit will provide the words is one of the most encouraging in Scripture. We do not need to have every answer prepared. When the moment comes, the Spirit speaks. This does not excuse laziness in study, but it removes the burden of performance. Witness is not a script; it is a Spirit-guided encounter.

The warning about family betrayal is painful but realistic. Following Christ can divide families, not because faith is divisive, but because truth is. When one person in a family encounters Christ, the resulting change can feel threatening to others. Jesus does not promise that discipleship will make all relationships easier. He promises that perseverance will lead to salvation.

Hosea's closing plea, "Return to the Lord your God," is the constant invitation beneath all the warnings. No matter how far we have strayed, the road back is always open. God promises to heal our faithlessness and love us freely.

Living It

Practice serpent-wisdom today in one difficult situation. Do not be naive about people's motives, but do not become cynical either. Navigate wisely while keeping your heart pure. This is the balance Jesus calls us to: eyes open, heart soft.

If you are facing opposition for your faith, remember: you do not need to have all the answers. Trust the Holy Spirit to give you the words when the moment comes. Preparation matters, but over-preparation can become a disguise for fear.

Persevere. Whatever difficulty you are facing in your faith journey, hold on. Jesus says the one who endures to the end will be saved. Endurance is itself a form of witness.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you send us as sheep among wolves. Make us wise as serpents and gentle as doves. When we face opposition, fill our mouths with your Spirit's words. When family or friends misunderstand us, give us patience and love. Help us persevere to the end, trusting that you are with us in every trial. Amen.
