Weekday Readings

Woe to You Who Have Seen and Not Believed

Where We Are

Tuesday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Matthew presents Jesus's sharpest words of judgment: woes against the cities that witnessed his miracles but refused to repent. The prophet Isaiah warns about trusting in military alliances rather than in God, a parallel rebuke against misplaced confidence.

The cities that saw the most were expected to respond the most. Jesus is not condemning outsiders here; he is grieving over insiders, over those who had every reason to believe and still chose not to.
