My Yoke Is Sweet

Where We Are

Thursday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time. Today's Gospel is just three verses, but they contain one of the most beloved invitations in all of Scripture. Yesterday, Jesus thanked the Father for revealing truth to little ones. Today, he turns to the weary and burdened and offers them something no other teacher has ever offered: rest for their souls. The prophet Isaiah speaks of God's faithfulness to those who trust him even in darkness.

The Word

"Come to me, all you who labor and have been burdened, and I will refresh you. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. Jesus does not call the strong or the self-sufficient; he calls the exhausted, the crushed, the overwhelmed. A yoke is a tool for work, yet Jesus says his yoke brings rest. The paradox is deliberate: union with Christ transforms labor into something life-giving rather than soul-destroying.
