Sunday Readings

Let Both Grow Until the Harvest

Where We Are

We continue in Ordinary Time, still seated with the crowds as Jesus teaches the parables of Matthew. Last Sunday he told of the sower and the soils. Today he offers three more images of the kingdom: weeds sown among the wheat, a tiny mustard seed, and a little yeast. The book of Wisdom prepares us to see God's power revealed in patience and mercy, and Paul reminds us that when we do not know how to pray, the Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

The Word

Wisdom marvels that God's mastery over all things shows itself not in severity but in clemency: the Lord judges with restraint and governs with lenience, teaching his people that the just must also be kind (Wisdom 12:19).

Jesus tells of an enemy who sows weeds among the wheat. The servants want to tear them out at once, but the householder says, let both grow together until the harvest, lest the wheat be uprooted with them (Matthew 13:30). He adds that the kingdom is like a mustard seed, smallest of seeds yet growing into a great shrub, and like yeast that leavens the whole batch. Paul roots our hope in the Spirit, who helps us in our weakness and prays within us.
