The Greatest Among You Shall Serve

Where We Are

Saturday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Matthew opens chapter 23 with Jesus's final public discourse: his denunciation of the scribes and Pharisees. Today's reading focuses on the first section, where Jesus contrasts their love of status, their broad phylacteries and long tassels, with the call to servant leadership. The greatest among you shall be your servant. The prophet Ezekiel sees God's glory return to the new Temple, filling it like water from the east.

The Word

"The scribes and the Pharisees have sat down in the chair of Moses. Therefore, all things whatsoever that they shall say to you, observe and do. But do not act according to their works" (Matthew 23:2-3). They broaden their phylacteries and lengthen their fringes; they love the first seats at banquets and greetings in the marketplace. "But you shall not be called 'Master,' for one is your Teacher, and all of you are brothers." And the summary: "Whoever will have exalted himself, shall be humbled. And whoever will have humbled himself, shall be exalted."
