Who Do You Say That I Am

Where We Are

We continue in Ordinary Time with the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus has fed crowds, walked on water, and praised a foreigner's faith. Now, at Caesarea Philippi, he turns to his closest disciples with the question at the heart of everything: who do you say that I am? Peter's answer becomes a turning point. The prophet Isaiah supplies a striking image behind it, the key of the house of David laid on a servant's shoulder, and Paul breaks into praise at the unsearchable wisdom of God.

The Word

Isaiah tells how Eliakim is clothed with authority and given the key of the house of David: what he opens none shall shut, what he shuts none shall open (Isaiah 22:22).

Jesus asks his disciples who people say he is, then makes it personal: "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answers, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus declares him blessed, for flesh and blood did not reveal this but the Father. "You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and I will give you the keys of the kingdom" (Matthew 16:18). Paul, gazing at such mystery, can only worship: how deep the riches and wisdom of God, how unsearchable his ways.
