Woe to Those Who Close the Door

Where We Are

Monday of the Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Matthew continues Jesus's denunciation of the scribes and Pharisees in chapter 23. Yesterday we heard about their love of status; today we hear the first woes, sharp condemnations of religious leaders who block others from entering the kingdom. Jesus does not condemn religion itself but religion that has become a barrier rather than a bridge. Paul's second letter to the Thessalonians opens with gratitude for a community growing in faith.

The Word

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! For you close the kingdom of heaven before men. You yourselves do not enter, and those who are entering, you would not permit to enter" (Matthew 23:13). Jesus denounces their elaborate oath-swearing, their manipulation of the Temple and the altar to avoid accountability, and their ability to strain out a gnat while swallowing a camel. These are not casual criticisms; they are prophetic warnings from the one who will soon offer his own life on the altar they have corrupted. Religious authority misused becomes the greatest obstacle to the very God it claims to serve.

Reflect

The woes are the opposite of the Beatitudes. Where the Beatitudes begin with "Blessed," the woes begin with "Woe." They mirror each other: the Beatitudes describe the kingdom's insiders; the woes describe its gatekeepers who have become barriers.

The most devastating charge is that the Pharisees "close the kingdom of heaven before men." They stand at the door, not entering themselves, and preventing others from entering. Religious leaders who use their position to control rather than serve become obstacles to the very God they claim to represent.

This is not just a first-century problem. Whenever religion becomes about rules rather than relationship, about maintaining power rather than sharing grace, the door is being closed. Whenever a person encounters judgment instead of welcome at the church door, the woes apply. We must examine ourselves honestly: are we opening the door or closing it?

Paul's letter to Thessalonica provides the contrast: a community where faith is growing and love is increasing. This is what the Church looks like when the door is open: growth, love, mutual encouragement. The antidote to the Pharisees' hypocrisy is not less religion; it is truer religion, the kind that flings the door wide and beckons everyone inside.

Living It

Examine whether you are opening or closing the kingdom's door for others. Your words, your attitude, your welcome (or lack of it) can either invite people in or push them away. The test is not your intention but the effect on the person standing at the threshold.

If you have been hurt by religious gatekeepers, know that Jesus condemns their behavior. The kingdom's door is open, even if some of its keepers have tried to close it. Walk through anyway.

Practice being a doorkeeper who opens rather than closes. Welcome someone today who might feel excluded from the community of faith. A warm greeting, a seat saved, a genuine question can make all the difference.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you pronounced woe on those who close the kingdom's door. Forgive us when we have been gatekeepers rather than welcome committees. Open the doors we have shut with our judgment, our coldness, and our hypocrisy. Make your Church a place where every person finds the door open and the Father waiting. Amen.
