Weekday Readings

Ask, Seek, Knock

Where We Are

Thursday of the Twenty-Seventh Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke follows the Lord's Prayer with a parable about persistence in prayer and a promise about the Father's remarkable generosity. If a reluctant friend will get up at midnight just to stop the knocking, how much more will a loving God give good things to those who ask? The Father's willingness to give far surpasses any human generosity. Galatians continues with Paul's foundational teaching on justification by faith rather than by works of the law.

Jesus then applies the lesson with a sweeping promise: "Ask, and it shall be given to you. Seek, and you shall find. Knock, and it shall be opened to you" (Luke 11:9). If earthly fathers give a fish when asked for a fish and an egg when asked for an egg, "how much more will your Father from heaven give the good Spirit to those who ask him?"
