A House Divided Cannot Stand

Where We Are

Friday of the Twenty-Seventh Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke records the accusation that Jesus casts out demons by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons. Jesus responds with devastating logic: if Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? Then he delivers one of his most sobering warnings about spiritual neutrality, declaring that whoever is not with him is against him. Galatians continues with Paul's argument that the promise to Abraham through faith precedes and surpasses the Law.

The Word

Jesus casts out a demon from a mute man. Some accuse him: "It is by Beelzebub that he casts out demons." Jesus responds: "Every kingdom divided against itself will be brought to desolation. If Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand?" Then: "When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own court, the things that he possesses are in peace. But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away all his armor and distributes his spoils" (Luke 11:21-22). "Whoever is not with me is against me."
