Areopagus (Mars Hill)
The Areopagus was a rocky hill northwest of the Athenian Acropolis that gave its name to the city's venerable council. Surrounded by altars and philosophers, it was where Paul stood to proclaim the unknown God to a curious crowd of Stoics and Epicureans. His sermon there met both mockery and faith, and a council member named Dionysius came to believe.
