Friday of the Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Matthew gives us the Parable of the Ten Virgins, a beloved story about preparedness and the consequences of spiritual negligence. Five are wise and bring extra oil for their lamps; five are foolish and bring only their lamps without reserve. When the bridegroom is delayed, the difference becomes fatal. The door closes, and no amount of pleading can reopen it. Paul tells the Corinthians about the foolishness of the cross, which is wiser than human wisdom.

The Word

Ten virgins take their lamps to meet the bridegroom. Five are wise and bring extra oil; five are foolish and bring none. The bridegroom is delayed, and all ten fall asleep. At midnight, the cry goes up: "The bridegroom is coming!" The foolish ask to borrow oil. The wise refuse: "There may not be enough for us and for you." While the foolish are away buying oil, the bridegroom arrives. The door is shut. The foolish knock: "Lord, Lord, open to us!" He replies: "Amen I say to you, I do not know you." Jesus concludes: "Therefore, be vigilant, for you do not know the day or the hour" (Matthew 25:13).

Reflect

The parable's power lies in its honesty about time. The bridegroom is delayed. All ten virgins fall asleep. The difference between the wise and the foolish is not wakefulness; they all sleep. The difference is preparation. The wise planned ahead; the foolish did not.

Faith cannot be borrowed. This is the hardest lesson of the parable. When the foolish ask for oil, the wise do not refuse out of selfishness; they refuse because oil represents the interior life, the relationship with God that cannot be transferred from one person to another. No one else's prayer can substitute for yours. No one else's faith can save you.

The shut door is sobering. There comes a point when opportunity closes. This is not God's cruelty; it is the consequence of unprepared choices accumulated over time. The foolish virgins had the same invitation, the same warning, and the same time as the wise. They simply chose not to prepare.

Paul's teaching about the cross being "foolishness to those who perish" provides the theological framework. The world's wisdom looks at the cross and sees defeat. God's wisdom sees victory. The world looks at ten virgins with oil and sees unnecessary caution. God sees preparedness. The world calls the cross foolish; God calls it power.

"I do not know you" echoes the earlier warning from the Sermon on the Mount. The most terrifying words are not "I reject you" but "I do not know you." Relationship is everything. Oil is the fuel of relationship.

Living It

Check your oil level. Are you maintaining the spiritual practices that keep your faith alive: prayer, Scripture, the sacraments, honest community? These cannot be crammed at the last minute. Faith is sustained by daily habits, not crisis conversions. The wise virgins were not smarter; they were simply prepared.

Do not rely on someone else's faith. Your parents' faith, your spouse's faith, your pastor's faith cannot substitute for your own. Cultivate your own relationship with God through practices that are yours alone.

Stay awake, but also prepare. Vigilance without preparation is anxiety. Preparation without vigilance is presumption. You need both: the watchfulness to notice the Bridegroom's approach and the oil to go out and meet him when he arrives.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, Bridegroom of our souls, keep our lamps burning. Fill us with the oil of prayer, faith, and love. When you are delayed, sustain our patience. When midnight comes, let us be ready. May we never hear the words "I do not know you," but always "Welcome, faithful ones." Come, Lord Jesus. Amen.
