Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant

Where We Are

Saturday of the Twenty-First Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Matthew gives us the Parable of the Talents, one of Jesus's most famous stories about stewardship and responsibility. Three servants receive different amounts from their master before he departs on a journey. Two invest boldly and double their gifts; one buries his in the ground out of fear. The consequences are stark and revealing. Paul reminds the Corinthians that God chose the foolish and weak things of the world to shame the strong.

The Word

A master gives five talents to one servant, two to another, and one to a third, "each according to his own ability." The five-talent and two-talent servants invest and double their gifts. The one-talent servant buries his in the ground out of fear. When the master returns, the first two hear the same commendation: "Well done, good and faithful servant. Because you have been faithful over a few things, I will station you over many. Enter into the joy of your Lord" (Matthew 25:21). The third servant, who played it safe out of fear, is cast into outer darkness. Faithfulness, not scale, is what the master rewards.

Reflect

The parable is not primarily about money; it is about responsibility. A talent was an enormous sum, roughly fifteen years' wages, so even the servant who received one talent had a significant gift. The master distributes unequally ("each according to his own ability"), but he does not expect equal results. He expects faithful use of what was given.

The five-talent servant and the two-talent servant receive identical praise: "Well done, good and faithful servant." God does not evaluate us against each other; he evaluates us against our potential. The servant who turned two into four is just as praised as the one who turned five into ten. Faithfulness, not magnitude, is the measure.

The one-talent servant's failure is not incompetence but fear. "I was afraid, and so I went and hid your talent in the ground." Fear of failure paralyzes. Fear of the master's harshness prevents risk. Ironically, by trying to avoid punishment, the servant brings the very punishment he feared upon himself.

The most telling line is the servant's description of his master: "I know you to be a hard man." His theology is wrong. The master is generous, not harsh. But a distorted image of God produces distorted behavior. If you believe God is a cruel taskmaster, you will hide your gifts in the ground. If you believe God is generous and trustworthy, you will invest with confidence.

Paul's reminder that God chose the weak and foolish things echoes the parable's logic: it is not the size of the gift that matters, but the faithfulness of the giver.

Living It

What talent has God given you? Not someone else's gift, yours. Are you using it, or burying it in the ground? Take one step today to invest your gift, however small it seems. The master does not ask for a specific return; he asks for faithfulness.

Examine your image of God. Do you see him as a harsh master who will punish mistakes, or a generous Father who rewards faithfulness? Your theology shapes your behavior. Fear buries; love invests.

Do not compare yourself to the five-talent person. If you have two talents and use them faithfully, you will hear the same words: "Well done." The reward is not proportional to the gift; it is proportional to the faithfulness.

Prayer

Lord God, you have given each of us gifts according to our ability. Forgive us when fear causes us to bury what you have entrusted to us. Free us from the lie that you are a harsh master. You are generous beyond measure. Help us invest what we have with courage and faith, so that on the last day, we may hear your welcome: "Well done." Amen.
