The Spirit of the Lord Is Upon Me

Where We Are

Monday of the Twenty-Second Week in Ordinary Time. The weekday Gospel shifts to Luke, who will be our companion for the remainder of the liturgical year. Today we hear Jesus's dramatic inauguration in his hometown synagogue of Nazareth. He reads from Isaiah, declares the Scripture fulfilled in their hearing, and faces violent rejection from the very people who watched him grow up. Paul begins his first letter to the Corinthians by speaking of God's power made known in weakness and the wisdom of the cross.

The Word

Jesus enters the synagogue in Nazareth, unrolls the scroll of Isaiah, and reads: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me. He has sent me to evangelize the poor, to heal the contrite of heart, to preach release to captives and sight to the blind, to set the bruised at liberty, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord" (Luke 4:18-19). He rolls up the scroll, sits down, and says: "Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." The crowd marvels, then turns hostile when he compares their rejection to Israel's history. They drive him out and try to throw him off a cliff, but he passes through their midst.

Reflect

This is one of the most dramatic scenes in the Gospels. Jesus reads the messianic mission statement from Isaiah 61 and then claims it for himself: "Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled." He is not just reading Scripture; he is declaring his identity. He is the anointed one. He is the one who brings good news to the poor.

The congregation's initial reaction is positive: they marvel at his gracious words. But when Jesus reminds them that the prophets Elijah and Elisha were sent to foreigners rather than Israelites, they explode with rage. Their admiration was conditional: they wanted a Messiah who would serve them exclusively. When Jesus hints that grace extends beyond Israel, their hometown pride turns to murderous fury.

This is the pattern of the Gospel throughout Luke: Jesus consistently reaches beyond the expected audience to include outsiders. The poor, the Gentiles, the sinners, women, the sick, all find welcome where the religious establishment does not.

Paul's statement about preaching Christ crucified connects to Nazareth's rejection. The cross is the ultimate expression of grace extended to outsiders. If Nazareth could not accept a Messiah who serves Gentiles, how much harder is a Messiah who dies for everyone?

Jesus passing through their midst untouched suggests sovereign control. His hour has not yet come. He cannot be destroyed before his time.

Living It

Read Luke 4:18-19 as your own mission statement. Through baptism, the Spirit of the Lord is upon you too. Where can you bring good news to the poor, release to captives, or sight to the blind today?

Examine whether your faith has an exclusive spirit. Do you welcome only those who are like you, or do you extend grace to the outsiders, the unexpected, the people your community might reject?

When your message of truth is rejected, do not be surprised. Jesus was rejected in his own hometown. Faithfulness does not guarantee applause.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, the Spirit is upon you, and through you, upon us. Send us to the poor, the captive, the blind, and the broken. When we are rejected for speaking truth, give us the grace to pass through the crowd and keep walking. May our mission be as broad as your mercy: for everyone, without exception. Amen.
