He Stood Over Her and Healed Her

Where We Are

Wednesday of the Twenty-Second Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke shows us Jesus leaving the synagogue and entering Peter's house, where Peter's mother-in-law is sick with a severe fever. From the synagogue to the home, from public teaching to private healing, Jesus brings the same authority everywhere he goes. His power is not reserved for sacred spaces; it flows into the ordinary rooms where people suffer. As evening falls, the whole city gathers at the door, and Jesus heals them all. Paul addresses divisions in the Corinthian church, urging them toward unity in Christ.

The Word

Jesus enters Simon's house and finds his mother-in-law "in the grip of a severe fever." They petition him on her behalf. "And standing over her, he commanded the fever, and it released her. And immediately, rising up, she ministered to them" (Luke 4:39). As the sun sets, people bring the sick and demon-possessed. Jesus heals them all. At daybreak, he withdraws to a deserted place. The crowds search for him: "Stay with us!" But he says: "I must also evangelize the other cities, for I have been sent for this purpose."

Reflect

Luke's description, "standing over her, he commanded the fever," portrays Jesus as a warrior confronting an enemy. The fever is personified; Jesus rebukes it as he rebuked the demon. In Luke's theology, illness is not just a medical condition; it is a form of bondage from which people need liberation.

The woman's response is beautiful in its simplicity: she rose and ministered to them. Healing leads to service. She does not lie back and recover slowly; she gets up and serves. This is the pattern of grace: we are healed not for our own comfort but for others' benefit.

Jesus's refusal to stay in Capernaum despite the crowd's pleas reveals his priorities. He could have stayed and established a permanent healing ministry in one city. Instead, he moves on: "I must evangelize the other cities." The word of God must spread. No single community can contain him.

Paul's concern about divisions in Corinth, "I am of Paul, I am of Apollos," parallels the crowd's desire to possess Jesus. We want to own what we love, to keep it close, to build walls around it. But the Gospel does not belong to any one group. The sower must keep moving.

The detail that Jesus heals "as the sun sets" is significant. The Sabbath ends at sundown, and only then can the sick be carried through the streets without violating the law. The people wait until it is legally permissible to seek healing. Even desperation respects the Sabbath.

Living It

When you are healed or helped, rise and serve. Grace received is grace that should flow outward. Peter's mother-in-law, the moment the fever left her, got up and began serving. What has God freed you from? Let that freedom become fuel for service to others rather than a reason to rest in comfort.

Do not try to contain Jesus in your favorite church, your preferred tradition, or your comfortable group. He must go to the other cities too. Support his broader mission with your prayers, your resources, and your willingness to let him move beyond your boundaries.

Bring someone to Jesus today, as the people of Capernaum brought their sick at sunset. Your prayer, your presence, your invitation might be the hands that carry them to healing.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you stood over Simon's mother-in-law and commanded the fever to leave. Stand over our sicknesses, our fears, and our bondages today. Free us, and as we are freed, send us to serve. When we want to keep you to ourselves, remind us that you have been sent to all the cities. Expand our vision to match your love. Amen.
