Friday of the Twenty-Second Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke presents the question about fasting that we heard earlier in Matthew's version. Today, Luke's account emphasizes the parable's conclusion about old and new wine. No one who has been drinking old wine immediately desires the new, "for he says: The old is better." This detail, unique to Luke, adds a pastoral dimension. Paul speaks of stewards who must be found trustworthy.

The Word

The Pharisees ask why Jesus's disciples eat and drink while John's disciples and theirs fast. Jesus answers with the image of the bridegroom: "How can you fast while the groom is still with them?" The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away, and then they will fast. He adds the parables of the patch and the wineskins: you cannot sew a piece of new cloth onto an old garment, nor pour new wine into old wineskins. New wine must go into new wineskins. Then Luke adds a detail the other evangelists omit: "And no one, while drinking the old, desires the new. For he says: 'The old is better'" (Luke 5:39).

Reflect

Luke's unique addition is brilliantly pastoral. People prefer old wine. They are comfortable with familiar flavors, traditional forms, established patterns. Jesus does not blame them for this preference; he acknowledges it. Change is hard. New wine is unsettling.

But the kingdom demands new wineskins. The old structures, whether Pharisaic legalism or any rigid religious system, cannot contain the fermenting grace of the Gospel. If you try to pour new wine into old skins, both are destroyed. The newness of Jesus requires forms flexible enough to hold it.

This is not a rejection of tradition. Old wine has genuine value; Jesus does not deny this. But clinging to the old while God is doing something new leads to missed opportunity. The question is not "old or new?" but "Am I flexible enough to receive what God is doing right now?"

Paul's instruction about stewardship connects: "It is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy." A trustworthy steward knows when to preserve the old and when to welcome the new. This requires discernment, not rigid conservatism or reckless innovation, but Spirit-led wisdom.

The bridegroom image grounds everything: while Jesus is present, it is a time for celebration, not mourning. Fasting has its place, but not during the wedding feast.

Living It

Are you clinging to the "old wine" of familiar spiritual practices while God is offering something new? This is not about abandoning tradition, but about recognizing when the Spirit is pouring fresh wine that requires a more flexible vessel. Ask the Holy Spirit if there is a new wineskin he is asking you to embrace.

Be gentle with those who prefer the old. Jesus was patient with this preference and even acknowledged it honestly. Change is hard, and people need time to taste the new wine before they can appreciate its sweetness.

Celebrate today. The Bridegroom is with you. There will be time for fasting, but right now, rejoice in Christ's presence. Joy is not irresponsible; it is the natural response to being in the company of the one you love.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are the new wine that bursts old wineskins. Give us hearts flexible enough to receive what you are doing right now. When we cling to the comfort of the old, gently stretch us. When we rush recklessly into the new, ground us in your truth. May we be trustworthy stewards of both the ancient faith and the fresh wind of your Spirit. Amen.
