If Your Brother Sins Against You

Where We Are

We continue in Ordinary Time with the Gospel of Matthew, which now turns to life inside the community of disciples. Today Jesus gives practical instruction for what to do when someone wrongs us: go and speak to them directly. The prophet Ezekiel sets the tone, appointed as a watchman responsible for warning others, and Paul sums up the whole law in a single debt we always owe, to love one another. Together they ask how we bear responsibility for one another without abandoning love.

The Word

Ezekiel is made a watchman for the house of Israel. If he fails to warn the wicked of their ways, their guilt will fall on him; but if he speaks, he saves his own life (Ezekiel 33:9).

Jesus teaches a careful path for fraternal correction. If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between the two of you alone; if he listens, you have won him over. Only if he refuses do you widen the circle. He adds the promise that where two or three gather in his name, he is there among them (Matthew 18:20). Paul names the heart of it all: owe nothing to anyone except to love, for love is the fulfillment of the law.

Reflect

We usually handle being wronged in one of two ways: we say nothing and let resentment grow, or we say everything to everyone except the person involved. Jesus rules out both. Go, he says, and speak directly, privately, first. The goal is not to win an argument but to win back a brother or sister.

That tiny instruction, just between the two of you, is quietly radical. It protects the other person's dignity, refuses the cheap relief of gossip, and treats the relationship as worth repairing. Confrontation, done this way, is not the opposite of love; it is one of love's harder forms.

Ezekiel reminds us why silence is not always kindness. To say nothing when someone is drifting into harm can be its own failure of love. We are, in a real sense, watchmen for one another, responsible not for controlling each other but for caring enough to speak the truth.

And it all rests on Paul's single rule: every commandment is summed up in love. Correction that does not aim at the other person's good is just criticism. But when two or three gather in Christ's name, even around something hard, he promises to be there, turning an awkward conversation into holy ground.

Living It

Is there someone you have quietly written off after a hurt, rehearsing the grievance to yourself or to others but never to them? Jesus asks for the harder, more loving path: go to them directly, privately, with the goal of winning them back rather than proving them wrong. Who might that be for you?

And is there a place where love is actually asking you to speak rather than stay silent, a friend drifting, a wrong you keep excusing? Before you go, pray for the person and check your motive: is this about their good or your vindication? Then, trusting that Christ is present where two gather in his name, have the conversation you have been avoiding.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you call us to seek out the one who has wronged us, not to condemn but to win them back. Give us the courage to speak the truth and the love that makes truth bearable. Make us faithful watchmen for one another, and where two or three of us gather in your name, be there among us. Amen.
