A Night in Prayer, a Morning of Choosing

Where We Are

Tuesday of the Twenty-Third Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke shows us Jesus at a pivotal moment: before choosing the Twelve, he spends the entire night in prayer on the mountain. This is the most important personnel decision in history, and Jesus prepares for it not with interviews or assessments but with communion with the Father. The night of prayer tells us something essential about how God works: the greatest decisions are made in silence, in darkness, in conversation with the One who sees what we cannot. Paul challenges the Corinthians about taking disputes before secular courts rather than resolving them within the community of faith.

The Word

"He went out to a mountain to pray. And he was in the prayer of God throughout the night" (Luke 6:12). When daylight comes, he calls his disciples and chooses twelve whom he also names apostles: Simon Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James of Alphaeus, Simon called the Zealot, Jude of James, and Judas Iscariot, who would become the traitor. Then he descends with them to the plain, and a great crowd gathers. He heals them all: those with diseases, those tormented by unclean spirits. Power goes out from him.

Reflect

Luke alone tells us that Jesus prayed all night before choosing the Twelve. This detail reveals something essential: even the Son of God sought the Father's will before making decisions. If Jesus needed a night of prayer to choose his team, how much more do we need prayer before our own decisions?

The list includes fishermen and tax collectors, zealots and traitors. It is not a committee selected for competence; it is a family chosen by grace. Judas is included, knowing what he will do. This tells us that God's choices are not based on guaranteed outcomes but on love and freedom.

The descent from the mountain to the plain mirrors Moses descending from Sinai. Jesus goes up to commune with God; he comes down to commune with people. Prayer is not an escape from the world; it is preparation for engagement with the world.

Paul's rebuke about lawsuits among believers provides an ironic contrast. The Corinthians cannot even resolve disputes among themselves. The Twelve, for all their flaws, will eventually learn to be a community of love. It takes time. It starts with a night of prayer.

Living It

Before your next important decision, pray. Not a quick prayer, but a sustained, unhurried conversation with God. If Jesus needed all night on the mountain, you might need more than thirty seconds at your desk. Let the silence do its work.

Reflect on the diversity of the Twelve. God does not choose people who all think alike. He chooses a tax collector and a zealot, the impulsive and the cautious, the faithful and the betrayer. Embrace the diversity in your own community of faith as a sign of the Kingdom's breadth.

Descend from your prayer into the world. Prayer without engagement is escapism. Engagement without prayer is activism. You need both, and the order matters: go up before you go out.

Prayer

Father, you heard your Son pray through the night and guided his choices in the morning. Teach us to pray before we act, to listen before we decide. Give us the wisdom to choose well and the grace to work with imperfect people, including ourselves. As Jesus descended from the mountain to serve, send us into the world from our prayer. Amen.
