Where We Are

Friday of the Twenty-Third Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke continues the Sermon on the Plain with three short but vivid images: the blind guide leading another blind person into a pit, the beam and the splinter, and the disciple who becomes like the teacher. These are quick, sharp sketches of what authentic discipleship looks like and what counterfeit discipleship looks like when it goes wrong. Each image forces a question: who are you following, what are you not seeing in yourself, and who are you becoming? Paul speaks of running the race to win, disciplining his body so that he himself is not disqualified.

The Word

"How can the blind lead the blind? Would they not both fall into a pit?" (Luke 6:39). "The disciple is not above his teacher; but each one will be perfected if he is like his teacher." This is both promise and warning: you will become like the one you follow. And the familiar image: "Why do you see the splinter in your brother's eye, but do not notice the beam in your own?" First remove the beam from your own eye, then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother's. The sequence is non-negotiable: self-examination before correction, honesty before helpfulness, humility before authority.

Reflect

Three images, one message: know yourself before you presume to lead or correct others. The blind guide is someone who claims to see but does not. The beam-in-the-eye person is someone who critiques others while ignoring their own faults. Both lead to disaster.

"The disciple is not above his teacher" cuts in two directions. On one hand, we should not expect to be treated better than Jesus was. On the other, we should aspire to become like our teacher. The goal of discipleship is not information transfer; it is transformation into Christ's likeness. "Each one will be perfected if he is like his teacher."

The splinter-and-beam image is one of Jesus's funniest moments. Picture someone with a wooden beam protruding from their eye, squinting at a speck in someone else's. The humor makes the point unforgettable: self-awareness must precede correction. A person who has honestly faced their own failures is the only one qualified to help others face theirs.

Paul's athletic metaphor, running to win, disciplining the body, connects to the same principle. Before you can lead others, you must master yourself. Before you can correct, you must be corrected. Before you can teach, you must learn.

Living It

Before correcting anyone today, pause and ask: "Is there a beam in my own eye?" Self-examination before correction is not weakness; it is wisdom. The person who has never examined their own faults will handle another's with clumsy and damaging hands.

Are you following a blind guide? Not every confident voice has clear sight. Test what you hear against Scripture, against the teaching of the Church, and against the fruit it produces. Good teachers bear good fruit; bad teachers produce confusion no matter how eloquently they speak.

Pursue Christlikeness. The disciple's goal is to become like the teacher. What one quality of Jesus do you most want to develop in yourself? Name it, and ask for his help to grow in it today.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, our teacher and model, remove the beams from our eyes before we reach for our brother's splinter. Give us the humility to examine ourselves and the clarity to see others with compassion. Make us like you: seeing clearly, loving deeply, and leading humbly. Amen.
