Forgive From the Heart

Where We Are

We continue in Ordinary Time with the Gospel of Matthew, still listening to Jesus teach about life together in the community of disciples. Last Sunday he spoke of correcting one another in love. Today Peter asks the obvious follow-up question: how often must I forgive? Jesus answers with a number meant to end all counting, and then a parable. The book of Sirach prepares the way, warning that we cannot nurse anger and expect mercy, and Paul reminds us that we belong, in life and death, to the Lord.

The Word

Sirach warns that wrath and anger are hateful things, yet we cling to them. Forgive your neighbor's wrongs, he says, and then your own sins will be pardoned when you pray (Sirach 28:2).

Peter asks whether forgiving seven times is enough. Jesus answers, seventy-seven times, and tells of a servant forgiven an unpayable debt of ten thousand talents who then seizes a fellow servant over a trivial sum and has him jailed. The master is appalled: should you not have had mercy as I had mercy on you (Matthew 18:33)? So, Jesus warns, his Father will deal with us unless we forgive from the heart. Paul grounds it all in belonging: whether we live or die, we are the Lord's.

Reflect

Peter thinks he is being generous. The rabbis spoke of forgiving three times; he doubles it and adds one. Jesus's answer, seventy-seven times, is not a higher quota but the end of quotas altogether. Forgiveness that is counting is not yet forgiveness.

The parable explains why with staggering math. Ten thousand talents was an unimaginable sum, more than a kingdom's wealth; a hundred denarii was a few months' wages. The contrast is the whole point. Set beside the mountain of debt God has forgiven us, every wrong done to us is the smaller amount.

What undoes the servant is not that he sins again but that he forgets. He takes his own forgiveness for granted and treats it as unrelated to how he handles others. Mercy received and mercy given are meant to be one motion; to break them apart is to misunderstand what we were given.

Notice too the phrase from the heart. Jesus is not asking for a stiff, teeth-gritted pardon that still rehearses the wound. That kind of forgiveness is real work, often slow, and Sirach is honest that anger clings. But it begins by remembering our own forgiven debt, and asking the One to whom we belong to soften what we cannot soften ourselves.

Living It

Whose debt are you still holding, replaying the wrong, keeping the ledger open? Hold it for a moment beside the debt God has already cancelled for you. Seen against that mountain, does the amount owed you look as large as it felt? This is not to minimize real hurt, but to put it in the light of mercy.

Choose one person to begin forgiving this week, not necessarily by a grand conversation, but by stopping the inner rehearsal and praying for them by name. Forgiveness from the heart is rarely instant; ask God, to whom you belong, to begin the slow thaw in you. Each time the resentment returns, hand it over again.

Prayer

Merciful God, you have forgiven us a debt we could never repay. When we are tempted to seize others by the throat over far smaller wrongs, remind us of your mercy. Soften our hearts to forgive as we have been forgiven, not grudgingly but from within, for in life and death we belong to you. Amen.
