Young Man, I Say to You, Arise
Where We Are
Tuesday of the Twenty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke tells of Jesus raising a widow's only son from the dead at the town of Nain. This is Jesus's first resurrection miracle in Luke's Gospel, and it deliberately echoes Elijah's raising of the widow's son at Zarephath centuries earlier. The widow would have been left destitute without her son, and Jesus sees her grief before she asks for anything. He is moved with compassion and acts without being requested. Paul teaches the Corinthians that there is one body but many members, each essential.

And he gave him to his mother" (Luke 7:13-15). Fear seized everyone: "A great prophet has risen among us. God has visited his people."
