Where We Are

Tuesday of the Twenty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke tells of Jesus raising a widow's only son from the dead at the town of Nain. This is Jesus's first resurrection miracle in Luke's Gospel, and it deliberately echoes Elijah's raising of the widow's son at Zarephath centuries earlier. The widow would have been left destitute without her son, and Jesus sees her grief before she asks for anything. He is moved with compassion and acts without being requested. Paul teaches the Corinthians that there is one body but many members, each essential.

The Word

Jesus approaches the gate of Nain and sees a funeral procession: a widow's only son is being carried out. "And when the Lord saw her, being moved with mercy toward her, he said to her, 'Do not weep.' And he drew near and touched the coffin. Then those who carried it stood still. And he said, 'Young man, I say to you, arise.' And the dead man sat up and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother" (Luke 7:13-15). Fear seized everyone: "A great prophet has risen among us. God has visited his people."

Reflect

Luke says Jesus was "moved with mercy." The Greek word splanchnizomai describes a visceral, gut-level compassion. This is not distant sympathy; it is the ache of a parent watching a child suffer. And the person Jesus sees is not the dead son but the grieving mother. She has lost her husband and now her only child. In the ancient world, this means economic ruin alongside emotional devastation.

"Do not weep" is not a platitude. It is a promise. Jesus does not say "stop crying" to minimize her pain. He says it because he is about to eliminate the cause. When Jesus tells you not to weep, it is because he is about to act.

Jesus touches the coffin, making himself ritually unclean. But as with the leper and the hemorrhaging woman, his holiness flows outward rather than contamination flowing inward. Death cannot infect the one who is Life.

"He gave him to his mother" echoes the Elijah story exactly. The prophet restored the widow's son and gave him to her. Jesus is greater than Elijah, but he follows the same pattern: God cares about individual grief, individual families, individual mothers who have lost everything.

Paul's teaching about the body's many members provides the communal backdrop. Every member matters. When one suffers, all suffer. The Church is the community that refuses to let anyone grieve alone.

Living It

Is there someone in your life carrying a grief so heavy they cannot speak? Be present with them. You do not need to fix it. Sometimes "do not weep" is spoken through silent companionship.

Reflect on the detail: Jesus saw the mother before he saw the dead son. He noticed the living griever before addressing the dead. Who are the invisible grievers around you?

Trust that Jesus sees your sorrow. Whatever loss you carry, he is "moved with mercy" toward you. He is not distant. He is approaching your gate.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you stopped a funeral and raised a mother's son. You are the God who sees our grief before we speak it. When we weep, move toward us with the same mercy you showed at Nain. Give life to what has died in us, whether a relationship, a dream, or a hope. And help us see the grieving before they have to ask. Amen.
