Where We Are

Wednesday of the Twenty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke gives us Jesus's comparison of his generation to children sitting in the marketplace, calling to each other: "We played the flute for you, and you did not dance. We sang a dirge, and you did not weep." John the Baptist was too austere; Jesus is too festive. Nothing satisfies. Paul delivers the great hymn to love in 1 Corinthians 13.

The Word

"John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.' The Son of man came eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a voracious man and a drinker of wine, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' Yet wisdom is justified by all her children" (Luke 7:33-35). This generation is like children in the marketplace calling to each other: "We played the flute for you and you did not dance; we sang a dirge and you did not weep." Nothing satisfies them. Whether the messenger comes fasting or feasting, the resistant heart finds a reason to reject. But wisdom's children, those who respond, are the proof that the message is true.

Reflect

Jesus exposes a form of spiritual resistance that is common in every age: the refusal to accept any messenger from God, regardless of their style. John came fasting; they said he was possessed. Jesus came feasting; they said he was a glutton. The problem was never the style; it was the message.

This is "nothing is ever good enough" syndrome applied to God. When we have already decided not to listen, we will find fault with every delivery. Too harsh, too soft, too intellectual, too emotional, too traditional, too progressive. The common denominator is our resistance, not the messenger's inadequacy.

"Wisdom is justified by all her children" is a proverb that means: look at the results. Do not judge the messenger by their style; judge the message by its fruit. John's austere witness produced repentance. Jesus's joyful witness produced healing and new life. Both were wisdom's children.

Paul's love hymn is the most famous passage in his letters: "Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, love does not boast." This is what wisdom's children look like. Not one style, not one personality, but the consistent fruit of love. If it produces love, it is from God, regardless of its packaging.

Living It

Are you dismissing a message from God because you dislike the messenger? Consider that God speaks through many voices, some comfortable and some uncomfortable. Listen for the truth, not the style.

Reflect on the children in the marketplace. Where in your life are you playing the flute and expecting everyone to dance, or singing a dirge and expecting tears? Let go of your agenda and listen for God's.

Read 1 Corinthians 13 slowly and measure your own love against Paul's standard. Not to feel guilty, but to know where growth is needed.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you came eating and drinking, and they called you a sinner. John came fasting, and they called him possessed. Forgive us when we dismiss your messengers because we dislike their style. Open our ears to the message beneath the packaging. May wisdom be justified in our lives by the fruit of love. Amen.
