No One Hides a Lamp

Where We Are

Monday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke gives us a brief saying about the lamp that no one hides under a container or a bed. This image, which we have seen in Matthew's Sermon on the Mount as "salt and light," here appears in a different context: after the parable of the sower. The light is connected to how we receive God's word. The Book of Proverbs provides the first reading with practical wisdom.

The Word

"No one, lighting a candle, covers it with a container, or sets it under a bed. Instead, he places it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light" (Luke 8:16). Then Jesus adds a solemn warning: "For there is nothing hidden that will not be made manifest, nor anything concealed that will not be known and come to light." Everything secret will eventually be exposed, whether good or evil. And the final word, both promise and warning: "Therefore, take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him it shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has shall be taken from him." The way you listen determines what you receive.

Reflect

In Luke's context, the lamp saying follows the sower parable. The connection is this: the word of God, once received, is not meant to be kept private. It is light that must be shared. Hearing the word is the beginning, not the end. If we receive it and hide it, we might as well not have heard it at all.

"Take heed how you hear" is a warning about the quality of our listening. Not just whether we hear, but how. Are we hearing actively, with the intention of acting? Or passively, letting the words wash over us without penetrating? The parable of the sower showed that different soil produces different results. This saying adds: even how you listen determines what you receive.

The principle "whoever has, to him it shall be given" is the spiritual version of compound interest. Those who respond to the light they have received get more light. Those who ignore it lose even what they thought they had. Faith grows by being exercised, like a muscle. Neglect it, and it atrophies.

Proverbs' wisdom, "Do not withhold a kindness from him who needs it, when you have the power to give it," connects practically. The lamp is lit by receiving truth; it shines by acting on it. Withholding kindness when you could give it is like hiding a lamp under a bed.

Living It

Let your light shine today. Share one truth you have received from God with someone who needs to hear it. Do not hoard the word; pass it on. A candle that is covered helps no one, and the gospel was never meant to be kept to yourself.

Take heed how you hear. When you read Scripture or hear a sermon today, listen with the intention of doing something specific in response. Active listening, the kind that leads to action, is what opens the door to receiving more. Passive hearing, by contrast, slowly erodes even what you think you possess.

Exercise the faith you have. The more you use it, the more you receive. Start small: one act of trust, one step of obedience, one word of truth spoken into the darkness around you.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are the light we have received. Help us not to hide you under a bed of comfort or a container of fear. Place us on the lampstand, so that those who enter our lives may see your light through us. Teach us to listen well and act boldly, so that what we have may multiply. Amen.
