My Mother and Brothers

Where We Are

Tuesday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke tells us of Jesus's mother and brothers arriving to see him but unable to reach him through the crowd. Jesus uses the moment to redefine family: those who hear God's word and do it are his mother and brothers. The Book of Proverbs speaks of the heart that plans its way while the Lord directs its steps.

The Word

"His mother and brothers came to him; but they were not able to go to him because of the crowd." Someone tells Jesus that his family is standing outside wanting to see him. He responds with words that expand every boundary of kinship: "My mother and my brothers are these: those who hear the word of God and do it" (Luke 8:21). Luke's version is gentler than Mark's: Jesus is not rejecting his biological family but redefining who belongs to his household. The family of God is formed not by blood but by obedience, not by birth but by listening and doing.

Reflect

Luke's version is gentler than Mark's (where Jesus seems to distance himself from his family). Here, Jesus is not rejecting his biological family; he is expanding the definition. Mary is included, not excluded, because she is the supreme example of someone who heard the word of God and acted on it. At the Annunciation, she said: "Let it be done to me according to your word." Her yes was not a single moment but a lifelong posture.

The family of God is formed by hearing and doing. Not just hearing, which is passive; not just doing, which might be performance. Both together: receiving the word and letting it transform action. This is the discipleship Luke has been describing throughout these chapters, a discipleship that begins with open ears and moves to active hands.

Proverbs provides practical wisdom: "The heart of the wise man perceives what he is taught, and he will draw near to knowledge." Hearing God's word is an act of the heart, not just the ears. The wise person draws near to what they hear, allowing it to shape their understanding and their behavior. The fool hears the same word and walks away unchanged. The difference is not intelligence but disposition, not capacity but willingness.

Living It

Reflect on your spiritual family. Who are the people who hear God's word with you and hold you accountable to act on it? They are your true brothers and sisters, the ones who walk beside you on the road of discipleship. Thank God for them today and let them know they matter.

Hear and do today. Choose one verse from Scripture and turn it into a specific action before sundown. Do not let the word remain an idea in your head; let it become a deed in your hands.

Like Mary, practice saying yes to God's word even when it disrupts your plans, even when the cost is unclear. "Let it be done" is the prayer of one who belongs to Jesus's family, and it is a prayer you can pray right now.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you call us mother and brother and sister when we hear your word and do it. Make us worthy of that kinship. Give us Mary's heart that receives your word and Mary's hands that act on it. Expand our sense of family beyond blood to include everyone who follows you. Amen.
