Where We Are

Friday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke gives us Peter's confession of faith, which we have heard in both Matthew's and Mark's versions. Luke's account is distinctive in its brevity and in what follows immediately: Jesus's first passion prediction and the call to take up the cross daily. Peter confesses Jesus as the Christ, and before the echo of his words fades, Jesus redefines what that title means. The Christ is not a conquering king but a suffering servant. Ecclesiastes reminds us that there is a time for everything under heaven, a season for every purpose.

The Word

Jesus asks the disciples: "Who do the crowds say that I am?" They answer: John the Baptist, Elijah, or one of the ancient prophets risen again. Then the question that changes everything: "But you, who do you say that I am?" Peter answers: "The Christ of God" (Luke 9:20). Jesus strictly charges them to tell no one, and immediately he predicts his suffering, rejection by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, his death, and his resurrection on the third day. The messianic secret and the way of the cross are inseparable: you cannot proclaim the Christ without proclaiming his suffering.

Reflect

Peter's answer is correct but incomplete. He knows Jesus is the Christ; he does not yet know what that means. Jesus immediately fills in the gap: the Christ must suffer, be rejected, be killed, and rise on the third day. The Messiah is not a conquering king but a suffering servant.

Ecclesiastes' famous poem, "A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot," provides the wisdom backdrop. There is a season for everything, and the Christ's season has come. The time for teaching and healing is giving way to the time for suffering and dying. Jesus knows the time, and he accepts it.

The command to tell no one is the "messianic secret" that runs through the Synoptic Gospels. Jesus does not want his identity proclaimed prematurely, before the cross gives it its proper meaning. A Messiah proclaimed without the cross would be misunderstood as a political figure. Only after the resurrection will the full meaning of "Christ" become clear.

"If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me." Luke alone adds "daily." The cross is not a one-time event; it is a daily discipline. Every morning, we choose to deny ourselves and follow. Every day is a new opportunity to take up the cross.

Living It

Answer Jesus's question for yourself today: "Who do you say that I am?" Let your answer be specific and personal, not a recitation of theology. He is not asking for a creed; he is asking for a relationship. What does he mean to you, in your life, right now?

Take up your cross daily. What does denial of self look like for you today? Not tomorrow, not in general, but today, specifically. Name one thing you will surrender, one comfort you will release, one preference you will set aside for love of God or neighbor.

Reflect on Ecclesiastes' seasons. What season are you in right now? Is it a time for planting or harvesting, mourning or dancing? Accept the season rather than fighting it, and trust that the One who made the seasons knows what you need.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are the Christ of God, the suffering servant, the risen Lord. When we want a Messiah without a cross, correct us. When we want faith without sacrifice, challenge us. Help us take up our cross daily, not just once, but every morning, following you through every season of life. Amen.
