The Son Who Changed His Mind

Where We Are

We continue in Ordinary Time with the Gospel of Matthew. The setting has shifted to Jerusalem, where Jesus now faces the chief priests and elders. Today he tells the parable of two sons, one who says no but goes, another who says yes but does not. The prophet Ezekiel sets up the theme of conversion, the wicked who turns and lives, and Paul gives us the great hymn of Christ, who emptied himself, the perfect pattern of a humble yes lived all the way to the cross.

The Word

Ezekiel answers a people who complain that God's way is unfair. When the wicked turn from their sin and do what is right, they shall surely live; the turning is what counts (Ezekiel 18:27).

Jesus asks about two sons. The father tells each to work in the vineyard. The first says no, then thinks better of it and goes; the second says yes, then never goes. Which did the father's will? The first. So, Jesus tells the religious leaders, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom ahead of them, because they believed and changed (Matthew 21:31). Paul lifts our eyes to Christ, who did not cling to equality with God but emptied himself, becoming obedient even to death on a cross.

Reflect

Both sons are flawed, and that is part of the point. One is rude but ends up faithful; the other is polite but ends up faithless. Jesus is not commending the first son's defiance, only insisting that what finally matters is not the answer we give but the life we live afterward.

The leaders he is addressing were the polite second son. They said all the right things about God while refusing the actual call when it came through John the Baptist. Meanwhile the tax collectors and outsiders, who had said no to God with their whole lives, were the ones turning around. Their no was becoming a yes.

Ezekiel had already named the principle. God does not lock us into our worst chapter. The wicked who turns will live; the past does not get the final word. What looks unfair to us, that a lifelong sinner can still come home, is simply how mercy works.

And the deepest yes is Christ's own. Paul shows us a Lord who did not merely talk about humility but lived it all the way down, emptying himself, taking the form of a servant, obedient to the cross. Our small turnings, our reluctant yet real yeses, are taken up into his, and that is why they can change everything.

Living It

Where in your life are you the second son, saying the right words about faith while quietly not going to the vineyard? Be specific: a commitment affirmed but not lived, a kindness promised but never done, a relationship you claim to value but do not show up for. Words are easy; the vineyard is where love is proved.

Then take heart from the first son: it is never too late to turn around. Pick one earlier no, to prayer, to a person, to a nudge you have resisted, and quietly make it a yes this week through a concrete action, not just an intention. And if your past makes you feel disqualified, remember who entered the kingdom first. The turning is what counts.

Prayer

Lord, you care less for our easy words than for the lives we actually live. Forgive the times we have said yes and not gone. Give us the humble mind of Christ, who emptied himself for us, and the grace to turn our every reluctant no into a faithful yes. Let no one believe their past has placed them beyond your mercy. Amen.
