He Set His Face Toward Jerusalem

Where We Are

Tuesday of the Twenty-Sixth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke arrives at a turning point in his Gospel: Jesus "steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem." Everything from this point forward is a journey toward the cross, and every teaching, every healing, every encounter takes place on that road. James and John want to call fire from heaven on a Samaritan village that rejected Jesus, revealing how poorly they understand his mission. He rebukes them: "You do not know of what spirit you are." Job cries out in anguish from the ashes.

The Word

"While the days of his ascension were being completed, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem" (Luke 9:51). The phrase is deliberate and solemn: Jesus does not drift toward Jerusalem; he sets his face like flint. He sends messengers ahead to a Samaritan village, but the villagers refuse to receive him because "his face was going toward Jerusalem." James and John ask: "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to consume them?" Jesus turns and rebukes them sharply: "You do not know of what spirit you are." And they go to another village. The rejected Messiah does not retaliate; he moves on.

Reflect

"He set his face" is a phrase from Isaiah 50:7, the suffering servant who says, "I have set my face like flint." Jesus is not walking toward Jerusalem by accident; he is marching toward his passion with deliberate resolve. This is not fatalism; it is courage.

The Samaritan rejection is practical, not theological. They refuse Jesus not because they disagree with his teaching but because he is heading to Jerusalem, the rival worship center. Old prejudices between Jews and Samaritans run deep.

James and John's response, "Shall we call fire from heaven?" echoes Elijah, who called fire on soldiers sent to arrest him. But Jesus is not Elijah. The kingdom of God does not advance by destroying its opponents. "You do not know of what spirit you are" is a rebuke that applies far beyond this moment. Whenever Christians want to punish those who reject them, they do not know of what spirit they are.

Job's anguish provides the emotional texture: "Why did I not die in the womb?" Job's suffering is not punishment; it is mystery. Jesus walks toward Jerusalem knowing that his suffering, too, is not punishment but redemption. The difference between Job's suffering and Jesus's is that Jesus chooses it.

They go to another village. No fire. No vengeance. Just a quiet departure and a continued journey toward the cross.

Living It

Where is your Jerusalem? What difficult destination has God set before you that you are tempted to avoid? Set your face toward it with Jesus's courage, knowing that the road to glory always passes through the place of surrender.

When you are rejected, resist the urge to retaliate. Jesus did not call fire on the village that turned him away; he simply moved on. Do the same. Rejection is not the end of the mission; it is a redirection to the next place where the word will be received.

Reflect on the spirit behind your actions. Is it the spirit of Elijah, fire and judgment, or the spirit of Christ, mercy and continued mission? "You do not know of what spirit you are" is a warning worth hearing regularly, especially when you feel righteous in your anger.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you set your face toward Jerusalem knowing what awaited you. Give us the same courage to face what lies ahead without flinching. When we are rejected, keep us from calling down fire. When we are tempted by vengeance, remind us of what spirit we are. Lead us forward, toward the cross, toward the resurrection, toward you. Amen.
