Where We Are

Wednesday of the Twenty-Sixth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke concludes chapter 9 with three brief encounters about the cost of following Jesus. Each potential disciple offers a condition, a "but first" that reveals where their heart is divided. Jesus responds each time by raising the stakes. The foxes have dens and the birds have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head. The road to Jerusalem is not for the halfhearted or the conditional. Job wrestles with God in the dust, refusing to curse God but also refusing to pretend that his suffering makes sense.

The Word

A man says: "I will follow you, wherever you will go." Jesus replies: "Foxes have dens, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to rest his head" (Luke 9:58). To another, Jesus says: "Follow me." The man asks to first bury his father. Jesus says: "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and announce the kingdom of God." A third says: "I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say goodbye to my family." Jesus responds: "No one who sets his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."

Reflect

Three encounters, three excuses, and Jesus's response to each is more demanding than the last. The first man offers enthusiastic commitment: "Anywhere you go!" Jesus cools the enthusiasm with honesty: following me means homelessness, vulnerability, no security. The kingdom's leader has no bed. Can you live with that?

The second request, to bury a father, seems reasonable by any standard. But Jesus's shocking reply, "Let the dead bury their dead," does not disrespect family duty. It reveals priority. In the ancient world, burial could take weeks. Jesus is saying: the kingdom cannot wait for the culturally expected timeline. When God calls, the response must be immediate.

The third echo of Elisha's call by Elijah. Elisha asked to say goodbye and was permitted. Here, Jesus is stricter: no looking back. The plow image is vivid. Ancient plows required constant forward attention. One glance backward and the furrow goes crooked. Discipleship demands forward focus.

Job's conversation with God provides the counterpoint of divine mystery. Job cannot understand why he suffers, but he refuses to curse God. His gritty faithfulness, without answers, without comfort, is the model of forward focus in the darkest conditions.

These three encounters are not meant to frighten people away from Jesus. They are meant to ensure that those who come know what they are committing to. Half-hearted following helps no one.

Living It

Examine your conditions. What are the "but first" clauses in your discipleship? "I will follow you, but first let me settle my finances, but first let me say goodbye to my old life." Name them honestly and bring them to Jesus.

Do not look back. If God has called you to something new, resist the pull of nostalgia for the old. The plow goes forward, and the farmer who keeps turning around to gaze at what is behind him will cut a crooked furrow.

Be honest about the cost. Following Jesus is not comfortable. It means no guaranteed security, no conventional timeline, and no backward glances. Is it worth it? Ask the disciples who followed him to the ends of the earth. Ask the saints. Ask yourself.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you have nowhere to rest your head, and you call us to follow. Forgive our conditions, our delays, and our backward glances. Set our hand firmly on the plow and our face toward the kingdom. When the cost feels too high, remind us that what we gain in you is worth everything we leave behind. Amen.
