Weekday Readings

Woe to the Unrepentant Cities

Where We Are

Friday of the Twenty-Sixth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke presents Jesus's woes against Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum, which we heard earlier in Matthew's version. In Luke, these woes follow immediately after the commissioning of the seventy-two, making the connection explicit: the cities that reject the messengers reject Jesus himself. Greater privilege brings greater accountability. Job continues his complaint before God, pouring out his anguish while still clinging to hope.

The Word

"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that have been wrought in you had been wrought in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago" (Luke 10:13). Capernaum, exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hell. The comparison is devastating: pagan cities that never witnessed miracles would have responded more faithfully than the towns where Jesus himself taught and healed. Then Jesus draws the ultimate connection between messenger and sender: "Whoever listens to you, listens to me. And whoever despises you, despises me. And whoever despises me, despises him who sent me."
