The Stone the Builders Rejected

Where We Are

We continue in Ordinary Time with the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus, now in Jerusalem, tells the chief priests a pointed parable about a vineyard and its faithless tenants. The image reaches back to the prophet Isaiah, whose song of the vineyard mourns a people that yielded only wild grapes. Paul, meanwhile, shows us how fruitful lives actually grow, not from anxiety but from prayer, thanksgiving, and minds fixed on whatever is true and good.

The Word

Isaiah sings of a beloved's vineyard, dug and planted with the choicest vines, from which he looked for good grapes but found only wild ones. The vineyard, he reveals, is the house of Israel (Isaiah 5:7).

Jesus takes up the image. A landowner leases his vineyard to tenants who beat and kill the servants he sends, and finally murder his own son to seize the inheritance. The kingdom, Jesus warns, will be given to a people who produce its fruit, for the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone (Matthew 21:42). Paul points to the soil such fruit grows in: have no anxiety, but in prayer and thanksgiving make your needs known, and the peace of God will guard your hearts.
