Who Is My Neighbor?

Where We Are

Monday of the Twenty-Seventh Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke gives us the Parable of the Good Samaritan, perhaps the most universally recognized story Jesus ever told. A lawyer asks: "What must I do to possess eternal life?" Jesus turns the question back: "What is written in the Law?" The lawyer knows the answer: love God and love neighbor. But then comes the follow-up: "And who is my neighbor?" Galatians begins as the first reading.

The Word

A man falls among robbers on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. A priest passes by on the other side of the road. A Levite does the same, averting his gaze. But a Samaritan, a despised outsider whom no one would expect to help, sees the man, is moved with compassion, binds his wounds with oil and wine, carries him to an inn, and pays for his care. Jesus asks the lawyer: "Which of these three was a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" The lawyer answers: "The one who showed mercy to him." Jesus says: "Go, and act similarly" (Luke 10:37).
