The Seventy-Two Go Out
Where We Are
Thursday of the Twenty-Sixth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke tells of Jesus appointing seventy-two disciples and sending them out in pairs ahead of him to every town and place he intends to visit. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. This expansion of mission beyond the original Twelve signals a broader call. Meanwhile, the Book of Job continues with the righteous man's anguished dialogue with God, wrestling with questions that defy simple answers.
The Word
"The Lord designated another seventy-two. And he sent them in pairs before his face, into every city and place where he himself was to come" (Luke 10:1). The harvest is great but the laborers few. He sends them as lambs among wolves, without purse, bag, or sandals. Whatever house they enter, they are to say: "Peace to this house." If they are received, they heal the sick and announce: "The kingdom of God has drawn near to you." If rejected, they shake the dust from their feet. The mission is urgent and the instructions are clear: travel light, trust God, and let the message do the work.
