The Least Among You Is the Greatest

Monday of the Twenty-Sixth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Luke shows the disciples arguing about which of them is greatest, and Jesus places a child beside him as the answer. This is the third time in Luke's Gospel that Jesus redefines greatness as smallness, power as service, and status as self-emptying. The one who is least among all of you, he says, that one is the greatest. The Book of Job begins this week, introducing us to the righteous man whose faith will be tested beyond all reason and whose suffering will strip away every comfortable theology.

The Word

"An idea entered into them, as to which of them was greater. But Jesus, perceiving the thoughts of their hearts, took a child and placed him beside himself. And he said to them: 'Whoever receives this child in my name, receives me. And whoever receives me, receives him who sent me. For he who is the least among all of you, this one is the greater'" (Luke 9:47-48). Then John reports that they stopped someone casting out demons in Jesus's name because he was not part of their group. Jesus says: "Do not prohibit him. For whoever is not against you is for you."

Reflect

The disciples are arguing about rank while walking with the one who will wash their feet. The contrast between their ambition and Jesus's humility is the constant tension of the Gospel.

By placing a child beside himself, Jesus makes a visual equation: to receive this child is to receive me, and to receive me is to receive the Father. The least important person in society becomes the representative of God. This inverts every hierarchy the disciples have ever known.

John's report about the unauthorized exorcist reveals another form of ambition: brand loyalty. "He was not following with us." The disciples want to control who can use Jesus's name. Jesus refuses to limit his power to his inner circle: "Whoever is not against you is for you." Grace is bigger than any group.

Job's story begins with a man who is "blameless and upright, fearing God and turning away from evil." He is the greatest man in the East. And he is about to lose everything. Job's journey will teach us that true greatness is not measured by possessions or status but by fidelity in suffering. The least becomes the greatest through faithfulness.

Living It

Notice who you treat as "least" today: the service worker, the child, the person with no influence or platform. Jesus says this person is his representative. When you welcome the smallest, you welcome him. Treat them accordingly, with the attention and respect you would give to Christ himself.

Do not try to control who God uses. The Kingdom is bigger than your church, your denomination, your circle of approved believers. "Whoever is not against you is for you." Let that sink in. God is at work in places you have not approved.

Reflect on Job's opening portrait. He is righteous and richly blessed. But what happens when the blessings are removed, when everything you thought was proof of God's favor is taken? True greatness is revealed not in prosperity but in testing.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you placed a child beside you and said: this is me. Forgive our obsession with status and rank. Open our eyes to see you in the smallest, the least, the overlooked. When we try to control your movement, expand our vision. You are bigger than our circle, wider than our group, and more generous than our gatekeeping. Amen.
