Herod the Great
Herod the Great was the Rome-appointed king of Judea known for his vast building projects, including the grand expansion of the Temple. When the magi sought the newborn king, he feigned worship while plotting to destroy the child. The Gospel recounts his slaughter of the infants of Bethlehem.
