Egypt
Egypt was the great river kingdom along the Nile that shaped much of Israel's early story, first as a refuge in famine and later as the land of bondage from which God delivered his people through Moses. The Passover and the exodus were rooted in this place of slavery and rescue. In the Gospels, Joseph took the child Jesus and his mother into Egypt to escape Herod, fulfilling the words spoken through the prophet.
