More Than Many Sparrows

Where We Are

Saturday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time. Jesus concludes his mission discourse with encouragement for the fearful. The disciples have heard about persecution, betrayal, and hatred. Now Jesus addresses the root of their anxiety: fear. Three times he tells them not to be afraid, grounding their courage in the Father's intimate knowledge of every detail of their lives. Isaiah provides the first reading with his overwhelming vision of God in the Temple.

The Word

"The disciple is not above the teacher, nor the servant above his master" (Matthew 10:24). If they called Jesus "Beelzebub," his followers should expect no better. "Therefore, do not fear them." What is hidden will be revealed. "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul." Not a single sparrow falls without the Father's knowledge. "Even the hairs of your head have all been numbered. Therefore, do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." Then the stakes: whoever acknowledges Jesus before others, Jesus will acknowledge before the Father. Whoever denies him will be denied.
