More Than Many Sparrows

Where We Are

Saturday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time. Jesus concludes his mission discourse with encouragement for the fearful. The disciples have heard about persecution, betrayal, and hatred. Now Jesus addresses the root of their anxiety: fear. Three times he tells them not to be afraid, grounding their courage in the Father's intimate knowledge of every detail of their lives. Isaiah provides the first reading with his overwhelming vision of God in the Temple.

The Word

"The disciple is not above the teacher, nor the servant above his master" (Matthew 10:24). If they called Jesus "Beelzebub," his followers should expect no better. "Therefore, do not fear them." What is hidden will be revealed. "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul." Not a single sparrow falls without the Father's knowledge. "Even the hairs of your head have all been numbered. Therefore, do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." Then the stakes: whoever acknowledges Jesus before others, Jesus will acknowledge before the Father. Whoever denies him will be denied.

Reflect

Isaiah's vision of God "high and lifted up" with seraphim crying "Holy, holy, holy" reminds us of God's transcendence. He is utterly beyond us. Yet the same God who fills the Temple with his glory counts the hairs on our heads. The God of infinite majesty is also the God of intimate detail. These two truths are not contradictory; they are complementary.

Jesus's logic against fear is simple: the worst anyone can do is kill the body. The soul is beyond human reach. This is not a dismissal of physical suffering; it is a reordering of priorities. When you know that your soul is safe in God's hands, the body's vulnerability becomes bearable.

The sparrow image is devastatingly tender. Sparrows were the cheapest sacrifice in the Temple, sold two for a penny. Yet not one falls without the Father's knowledge. If God attends to the death of a bird worth half a cent, how much more does he attend to you?

Isaiah's response to the vision of God's holiness is: "Woe is me, for I am a man of unclean lips." The seraph touches his lips with a burning coal, and his sin is purged. Then God asks: "Whom shall I send?" Isaiah answers: "Here am I; send me." Fear is purged by the encounter with holiness, and from that purified heart comes the willingness to be sent.

Living It

Count one small detail of your life that you think God might overlook. He does not. The hairs on your head are numbered. Carry that knowledge into your anxious moments today. Let it sink from your mind into your bones.

If you are afraid to speak about your faith publicly, hear Jesus's promise: whoever acknowledges him before others, he will acknowledge before the Father. Take one small step of witness today. You do not need a megaphone; a conversation over lunch will do.

Pray Isaiah's prayer: "Here am I; send me." Let God purge your fears and commission you for his purpose, wherever that leads.

Prayer

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts. You fill the Temple with your glory and count the hairs on our heads. Drive out our fear with the knowledge of your intimate love. If a sparrow does not fall without your notice, we are safe in your hands. Send us where you will, for we trust you with everything. Amen.
