Revealed to Little Ones

Where We Are

Wednesday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time. After pronouncing woes against unrepentant cities, Jesus lifts his eyes to heaven in a prayer of thanksgiving. The contrast is striking: judgment followed by gratitude, sternness followed by tenderness. The Father has hidden the mysteries of the kingdom from the clever and revealed them to those with the hearts of children. The prophet Isaiah warns about the arrogance of worldly power.

The Word

"I acknowledge you, Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the prudent, and have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, for this was pleasing before you" (Matthew 11:25-26). Then Jesus makes a stunning claim about the exclusive intimacy between Father and Son: "All things have been delivered to me by my Father. And no one knows the Son except the Father, nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and those to whom the Son is willing to reveal him." Knowledge of God is not earned; it is received as gift through the Son's initiative.

Reflect

The "wise and prudent" are not criticized for being intelligent. They are criticized for thinking their intelligence gives them access to God. The "little ones" are not praised for being ignorant. They are praised for approaching God with open hands and teachable hearts. Wisdom in God's kingdom begins with the admission that we do not know enough.

Jesus's claim about mutual knowledge between Father and Son is one of the highest Christological statements in the Gospels. Only the Father truly knows the Son, and only the Son truly knows the Father. This places Jesus on the same level as God, sharing an exclusive intimacy with the Father that no creature can claim.

But the statement does not end with exclusivity. It ends with invitation: "and those to whom the Son is willing to reveal him." The Son chooses to share the Father's knowledge with others. This is pure grace. We do not discover God through our brilliance; we receive him as a gift from the Son.

Isaiah's warning about Assyria's arrogance provides the contrast: the axe boasts against the one who wields it. When human wisdom forgets its source, it becomes self-destructive. The truly wise are those who remember they are instruments, not originators.

Living It

Approach God as a child today. Set aside your expertise, your accomplishments, your certainties. Come with open hands and an honest prayer: "Father, reveal yourself to me." The kingdom belongs to those who know they need it, not to those who think they have earned it.

If you feel spiritually stalled, consider whether intellectual pride might be the barrier. Sometimes knowing too much about God prevents us from knowing God. Theology that does not lead to wonder has become an obstacle rather than a path.

Thank Jesus for choosing to reveal the Father to you. This is not something you earned; it is a gift freely given. Let gratitude, not achievement, be the foundation of your prayer today.

Prayer

Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for revealing your truth to little ones. Make us humble enough to receive what the wise miss. Jesus, Son of the Father, reveal the Father's love to us today. Strip away our pretense and our pride, and give us the hearts of children. Amen.
