Revealed to Little Ones

Where We Are

Wednesday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time. After pronouncing woes against unrepentant cities, Jesus lifts his eyes to heaven in a prayer of thanksgiving. The contrast is striking: judgment followed by gratitude, sternness followed by tenderness. The Father has hidden the mysteries of the kingdom from the clever and revealed them to those with the hearts of children. The prophet Isaiah warns about the arrogance of worldly power.

The Word

"I acknowledge you, Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the prudent, and have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, for this was pleasing before you" (Matthew 11:25-26). Then Jesus makes a stunning claim about the exclusive intimacy between Father and Son: "All things have been delivered to me by my Father. And no one knows the Son except the Father, nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and those to whom the Son is willing to reveal him." Knowledge of God is not earned; it is received as gift through the Son's initiative.
