The Sower's Generous Hand

Where We Are

Wednesday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time. The weekday lectionary returns to the Parable of the Sower, which we heard on Sunday in its full form. Today we hear the parable itself without the explanation, letting it speak on its own terms and inviting us to sit with its images before rushing to interpretation. The prophet Jeremiah appears for the first time this week, called by God before he was born, set apart as a prophet to the nations.

The Word

Jesus sits in a boat and teaches the crowd on shore. A sower goes out to sow. Seed falls on the path, on rocky ground, among thorns, and on good soil. The harvest from good soil is thirty, sixty, a hundredfold (Matthew 13:1-9). The same seed encounters four different receptions, and the results could not be more different. The sower does not discriminate; he scatters generously, even on ground that seems hopeless. Jeremiah hears God say: "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. And before you departed from the womb, I sanctified you" (Jeremiah 1:5). God's knowing precedes our existence.

Reflect

Hearing the parable without the explanation changes the experience. We are invited to sit with the story and let it work on us, the way a seed works in soil, slowly, quietly, from the inside.

The sower's generosity is remarkable. He does not inspect the soil before planting. He does not limit his seed to the guaranteed good ground. He scatters everywhere, lavishly, even on the path and the rocks. This is the character of God: extravagant grace poured out without calculating the return on investment.

Jeremiah's calling reveals that God's sowing begins before we are even aware of it. "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you." The seed of our vocation was planted before we drew our first breath. We are not accidents; we are intentional sowings by a God who knew what he was doing.

Jeremiah protests: "I do not know how to speak, for I am a child." God replies: "Do not say, 'I am a child.' For you shall go to all those to whom I will send you." Our sense of inadequacy does not disqualify us from God's purposes. The sower does not depend on the soil's self-confidence; he depends on the power of the seed.

Living It

Let God's word fall on you today without trying to analyze or control it. Read a passage of Scripture and simply receive it, like soil receiving seed.

If you feel too young, too inexperienced, or too inadequate for what God seems to be calling you to, hear his word to Jeremiah: "Do not say, 'I am a child.' I have known you from the womb."

Be generous like the sower. Share a word of truth or encouragement with someone today without worrying about whether they are "good soil." That is God's concern, not yours.

Prayer

Lord God, you sow your word with extravagant generosity, scattering it on every kind of ground. You knew us before we were born and called us before we could respond. Plant your word deep in us today. Let it take root in good soil and bear fruit that lasts. Amen.
