Why Parables?

Thursday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time. The disciples ask the question every reader wonders: Why does Jesus speak in parables? His answer is surprising and somewhat uncomfortable. Parables are not just teaching tools; they are acts of judgment and mercy simultaneously. They reveal truth to those who are ready and conceal it from those who refuse. The prophet Jeremiah speaks of Israel abandoning God, the spring of living water, for broken cisterns.

The Word

"Why do you speak to them in parables?" the disciples ask (Matthew 13:10). Jesus answers: "Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but it has not been given to them." He quotes Isaiah: "Hearing, they shall hear and not understand; and seeing, they shall see and not perceive." Yet to the disciples he says: "Blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear." Parables are not riddles designed to confuse; they are invitations that reward the seeker. Those who come with open hearts discover truth; those who come with closed minds confirm their own blindness.

Reflect

This is one of the most theologically dense passages in Matthew. Parables function as both revelation and concealment. For those with open hearts, a parable cracks open a truth too large for direct statement. For those with closed hearts, it remains a nice story, harmless and forgettable.

Jesus quotes Isaiah 6, the prophet's commission, where God tells Isaiah that his preaching will actually harden people's hearts. This is not God's desire; it is the tragic result of persistent refusal. When people keep saying no to truth, they eventually lose the ability to hear it. Their ears become dull; their eyes close. Not because God shuts them, but because they have closed themselves.

Jeremiah's image of broken cisterns is powerful. Israel has abandoned God, the fountain of living water, and dug cisterns that cannot hold water. They have traded the real thing for a broken substitute. This is what happens when hearts harden: we lose the capacity to recognize genuine truth and settle for cheap imitations.

Yet the disciples' eyes and ears are blessed. The same truth that hardens some hearts opens others. The difference is not intelligence but willingness. "Whoever has, to him more shall be given." Those who respond to the first glimmer of light receive more light. Those who refuse the first ray end in deeper darkness.

Living It

Examine your receptivity to God's word today. Are your ears dull or attentive? Are your eyes closed or open? If you sense spiritual dullness, ask the Holy Spirit to reopen what has been shut. Sometimes the first step is simply admitting that you have stopped paying attention.

Reflect on Jeremiah's image: have you been drinking from broken cisterns, substitutes for God's living water, whether comfort, success, entertainment, or approval? Return to the fountain. It has never run dry.

When you hear Scripture today, listen for the parable beneath the parable. Ask: What is Jesus revealing to me that I have not yet seen? Let the question sit with you.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, open our eyes to see and our ears to hear. When we have grown dull to your word, break through our resistance with your grace. Lead us from broken cisterns to living water. Give us the blessed eyes of your disciples, who saw what prophets longed to see. Amen.
