Where We Are

Saturday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Matthew introduces a new parable: the wheat and the weeds. A farmer plants good seed, but an enemy sows weeds overnight. When the servants want to pull up the weeds, the master says no: let both grow together until the harvest. This parable speaks to one of the most persistent questions in faith: why does God allow evil? The prophet Jeremiah confronts the people about turning the Temple into a "den of robbers."

The Word

"The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while the men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds amid the wheat" (Matthew 13:24-25). The servants discover the weeds and ask their master: "Do you want us to gather the weeds?" The master answers with surprising restraint: "No, lest in gathering the weeds, you uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest." At harvest time, the weeds will be separated and burned; the wheat will be gathered safely into the barn.

Reflect

This parable addresses two temptations: the temptation to prematurely purify the Church, and the temptation to despair because evil exists alongside good.

The servants' instinct to pull the weeds is understandable. We want a clean field. We want evil removed immediately. But the master sees what the servants cannot: the roots of the wheat and the weeds are intertwined. Pulling one uproots the other. Premature judgment does more damage than patience.

This has practical implications for how we treat the Church and the world. There will always be weeds among the wheat. Imperfect people will sit beside saints. Hypocrisy will exist alongside genuine holiness. The solution is not purging but patience, trusting God to sort things out at the harvest.

But the parable does not excuse complacency about evil. The weeds will be burned. Justice is coming; it is simply not ours to administer prematurely. Our job is to grow, to produce fruit, and to trust the master's timeline.

Jeremiah's rebuke about The Temple is relevant. The people thought being in the Temple made them safe, even while they practiced injustice. The Temple is full of both wheat and weeds. Being in the right building does not guarantee being on the right side of the harvest.

Living It

Resist the urge to play judge today. When you encounter hypocrisy or evil, whether in the Church, in society, or in yourself, remember: the master said to let both grow together. Your job is to be wheat, not to uproot weeds. Judgment belongs to God alone.

Practice patience with imperfection, in yourself and in others. The field is messy. That does not mean God has lost control. It means he is patient in ways we find hard to understand.

Trust the harvest. Justice will come. It is not your responsibility to enforce it prematurely. It is your responsibility to grow faithfully where you are planted and to bear good fruit.

Prayer

Lord God, you allow wheat and weeds to grow together, and we do not always understand why. Give us patience with the messiness of life, the Church, and our own hearts. Help us be wheat: rooted, fruitful, and patient. We trust the harvest to you. Amen.
