Where We Are

Monday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time. The weekday lectionary gives us the mustard seed and yeast parables again, this time in their weekday context. We can hear them freshly, as standalone images rather than part of a longer discourse, and let their simplicity speak directly. The prophet Jeremiah tells the strange story of a linen belt buried by a river, a parable of Israel's corruption: what was once close to God and beautiful has been ruined by distance and neglect.

The Word

"The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed" (Matthew 13:31). The smallest of seeds becomes a tree large enough for birds to nest in its branches. The kingdom is also like leaven hidden in three measures of flour until the whole batch rises. Both images point to the same truth: God's kingdom begins small and hidden, then transforms everything it touches. "Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables, and he did not speak to them without parables, in order to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: 'I will open my mouth in parables; I will proclaim what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.'"

Reflect

The mustard seed parable is a direct challenge to our expectations about how God works. We expect the kingdom to arrive with power and drama. Instead, it arrives as a seed, the smallest seed in the garden. Its beginnings are so humble that no one notices. But given time and the right conditions, it becomes a tree, providing shelter for the birds of the air.

The leaven parable adds another dimension. The woman does not display the yeast; she hides it in the dough. The kingdom's transforming agent is invisible. You cannot see yeast working, but you can see the results: the dough rises, expands, becomes something nourishing. Similarly, the kingdom works through hidden acts of love, secret prayers, and unnoticed faithfulness.

Jeremiah's linen belt is a reverse parable. God tells him to buy a beautiful belt, wear it, then bury it by the river. When he digs it up, it is ruined. The belt represents Israel's closeness to God: when worn close to the body, it is beautiful; when buried in mud, it rots. Intimacy with God preserves us; distance destroys us.

Matthew quotes Psalm 78: "I will proclaim what has been hidden since the foundation of the world." The parables reveal truths that have been waiting since creation to be spoken. They are not human inventions; they are divine disclosures, hidden in plain sight until Jesus opens our eyes.

Living It

Plant a mustard seed today. Do something small for the kingdom: an act of kindness, a word of truth, a moment of prayer for someone who does not expect it. Trust that it will grow beyond what you can see. The kingdom advances through faithfulness, not spectacle.

Be leaven. Work quietly and faithfully where you are. You may never see the results in your lifetime, but the dough is rising. God does not ask you to finish the work; he asks you to be faithful in the middle of it.

Stay close to God. Jeremiah's linen belt teaches that distance leads to decay, that what was once beautiful rots when separated from its source. Whatever spiritual practice keeps you close to Christ, a daily prayer, a weekly sacrament, a moment of silence, do not neglect it.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you reveal truths hidden since the foundation of the world. Open our eyes to see the kingdom at work in the smallest seeds and the hidden leaven. Keep us close to you, like a belt worn next to the skin, so that we do not decay in distance. Let our small acts of faith grow into great trees. Amen.
