The Harvest at the End of the Age
Where We Are
Tuesday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time. The disciples ask Jesus privately to explain the parable of the wheat and the weeds. He gives them the interpretation in stark, eschatological terms: the field is the world, the good seed are the children of the kingdom, the weeds are the children of the evil one, and the harvest is the end of the age. The prophet Jeremiah weeps over the destruction he sees coming.
The Word
"He who sows the good seed is the Son of man. The field is the world. The good seed: these are the children of the kingdom. But the weeds are the children of the evil one. The enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the close of the age. The reapers are angels" (Matthew 13:37-39). At the harvest, the angels will collect the weeds and burn them. "Then the just will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear."
