The Harvest at the End of the Age

Where We Are

Tuesday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time. The disciples ask Jesus privately to explain the parable of the wheat and the weeds. He gives them the interpretation in stark, eschatological terms: the field is the world, the good seed are the children of the kingdom, the weeds are the children of the evil one, and the harvest is the end of the age. The prophet Jeremiah weeps over the destruction he sees coming.

The Word

"He who sows the good seed is the Son of man. The field is the world. The good seed: these are the children of the kingdom. But the weeds are the children of the evil one. The enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the close of the age. The reapers are angels" (Matthew 13:37-39). At the harvest, the angels will collect the weeds and burn them. "Then the just will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear."

Reflect

Jesus's explanation makes the parable's stakes unmistakable. This is not a quaint farming story; it is a description of the end of history. The field is the world; the drama is cosmic. Good and evil grow together until God decides to separate them.

The image of the just shining "like the sun" echoes Daniel 12:3: "Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the heavens." This is the promise to everyone who endures patiently while surrounded by weeds: your day is coming. The harvest will vindicate what the growing season obscured.

Judgment in Jesus's parables is never arbitrary. The weeds are not burned because they are unlucky; they are burned because they are weeds, the product of the enemy's deliberate sowing. Evil is not an accident; it is an invasion. And God's response is not indifference; it is patient justice.

Jeremiah's tears provide the emotional texture. He weeps because he can see what is coming. "My eyes shall flow with tears, because the flock of the Lord has been taken captive." The prophet's tears are not weakness; they are love. God himself weeps over the lost. The harvest is not something God looks forward to with satisfaction but with sorrow for what has been wasted.

"Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear" is both invitation and warning. The parable is speaking. The question is whether we are listening.

Living It

Live as wheat today: rooted, fruitful, patient. You do not need to worry about the weeds around you; God will handle them in his own time. Focus on your own growth and on bearing the kind of fruit that nourishes others.

Reflect on the promise: the just will shine like the sun. Whatever obscurity or difficulty you face now, there is a day when everything hidden will be revealed in glory. Hold onto that hope, especially when the present feels unrewarding.

Do you have ears to hear? Ask the Holy Spirit to make you attentive to Jesus's teaching today, not just intellectually but with your whole life. Let understanding lead to action.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, Son of man, sower of good seed, we trust your harvest. When the weeds seem overwhelming and the field looks chaotic, remind us that you are the master of the field. Help us grow patiently, shine faithfully, and trust that the just will one day radiate like the sun in your kingdom. Amen.
