The Net Cast into the Sea

The net parable teaches us that the Church in this age is a mixed community. The net gathers every kind of fish, good and bad. Sorting does not happen while fishing; it happens on the shore. This is both humbling and reassuring. Humbling because we cannot claim the Church is pure; reassuring because the final sorting is God's job, not ours.

Jeremiah's image of the potter is profoundly relevant. God shapes us like a potter shapes clay. When the vessel is marred, the potter does not discard the clay; he reshapes it. This is mercy in action. We are always being formed, and even our failures are material God can work with.

Jesus's final metaphor, the scribe instructed in the kingdom, is often overlooked but deeply meaningful. A disciple is like a householder with a storehouse full of "new things and old." The old is the Law and the Prophets; the new is the kingdom Jesus reveals. A mature disciple does not discard the old for the new, nor cling to the old while refusing the new. They bring forth both, weaving tradition and revelation into a coherent whole.

The parable discourse ends with a question: "Have you understood?" The disciples say yes, but the rest of Matthew's Gospel will show that their understanding is still growing. Understanding the kingdom is not a one-time event; it is a lifelong process.

Accept the mixed nature of the Church and the world. Do not be scandalized that the net contains every kind of fish. Trust that sorting day is coming, and focus on being a good fish yourself. Your responsibility is faithfulness, not enforcement.

Let God reshape you. If something in your life feels marred or broken, bring it to the Potter. He does not throw away broken clay; he reworks it into something new and beautiful. Your brokenness is not the end of your story.

Bring forth new things and old from your spiritual storehouse. Value tradition and be open to fresh revelation. The healthiest faith honors both the ancient and the new, finding treasure in each.
