Where We Are
Wednesday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Matthew brings us two of Jesus's shortest and most powerful parables: the treasure hidden in a field and the pearl of great price. "The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. When a man finds it, he hides it, and, because of his joy, he goes and sells everything that he has, and he buys that field" (Matthew 13:44). The kingdom is also like a merchant seeking good pearls who finds one of surpassing value and sells everything to purchase it. In both parables the response is total: everything is surrendered, not out of grim duty but out of overwhelming joy. The man who finds the treasure does not calculate the cost; his joy makes the sacrifice feel like nothing. This is how the kingdom works: when you truly see what Christ offers, everything else becomes secondary.
