The Treasure Worth Everything

Where We Are

We are in Ordinary Time, and today Jesus brings his parables of Matthew to a close. Over recent Sundays we have heard of the sower, the weeds, the mustard seed and the yeast. Now he offers three final images: a hidden treasure, a pearl of great price, and a net cast into the sea. The first reading shows young Solomon asking God not for riches but for a wise and understanding heart, and Paul assures us that God works all things for the good of those who love him.

The Word

At Gibeon, God invites Solomon to ask for anything. The young king asks only for an understanding heart to govern God's people and to discern good from evil. God is so pleased that he grants wisdom beyond any before or after him (1 Kings 3:12).

Jesus likens the kingdom to a treasure hidden in a field: the one who finds it joyfully sells everything to buy that field. It is like a merchant who, finding one pearl of surpassing value, sells all he has to possess it (Matthew 13:46). A net gathers fish of every kind, to be sorted at the end of the age. Paul adds the deepest reassurance: for those who love God, all things work together for good.

Reflect

Notice the emotion in the parable. The man who finds the treasure does not grudgingly liquidate his assets; he goes off in joy and sells all he has. When you have truly glimpsed the kingdom, giving everything for it no longer feels like loss. It feels like the best trade you could ever make.

That is the hidden test in these short stories. We will sacrifice for whatever we believe is the pearl. Our calendars and bank statements quietly reveal what we have already decided is worth selling everything for. Jesus asks, gently, whether the kingdom is truly that treasure for us, or merely one possession among many.

Solomon shows us where to begin. Offered anything, he asks for an understanding heart, because without wisdom we cannot even recognize the treasure when we stumble onto it. The first prayer of the seeker is for eyes that can tell the pearl from the costume jewelry.

And the net reminds us this choosing is not yet final; good and bad grow together until the end. Meanwhile Paul steadies us: every thread of our lives, even the painful ones, God is weaving toward good for those who love him. The treasure is real, and the One who hid it in the field will help us find it.

Living It

If your spending and your hours are a map of your treasure, what do they reveal you are selling everything for? Sit honestly with that this week, not to feel guilty, but to notice where your real pearl currently lies. Naming it is the start of choosing freely.

Then borrow Solomon's prayer. Ask God for an understanding heart, the wisdom to recognize his kingdom and the courage to reorder one thing around it. Maybe that means letting go of something good to make room for the best, or simply spending an hour this week on what you say matters most. Joy, not duty, is the sign you are on the right track.

Prayer

Generous God, you gave Solomon a wise and understanding heart, and your Son revealed the kingdom as a treasure worth everything. Give us eyes to see that pearl and hearts glad to seek it above all else. Order our loves and our days around you, and weave all things, even our losses, toward the good you intend. Amen.
