Where We Are

Tuesday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Matthew presents a scene that must have been uncomfortable for everyone involved. Jesus is teaching inside a house, and his mother and brothers arrive, asking to speak with him. His response redefines the meaning of family in the most radical way imaginable: belonging is no longer determined by blood alone but by obedience to the Father's will. The prophet Micah provides the first reading, celebrating God's faithfulness and mercy toward his people.

The Word

Someone tells Jesus: "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, seeking you." Jesus stretches out his hand toward his disciples and says: "Behold, my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father, who is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother" (Matthew 12:49-50). Jesus is not rejecting his earthly family; he is expanding the definition of kinship beyond blood. In the kingdom, obedience to the Father creates bonds deeper than biology. Mary herself is the supreme example: she is mother of Jesus both by flesh and by her perfect "yes" to God's will.

Reflect

This is one of the most misunderstood passages in Scripture. Jesus is not rejecting his mother. He is expanding the definition of family beyond blood to include everyone who does the Father's will. In a culture where family loyalty was the supreme value, this is revolutionary.

The early Church understood this. Believers called each other "brother" and "sister" not as a metaphor but as a statement of reality. The family of God is a real family, bound not by DNA but by the Holy Spirit. This does not diminish biological family; it enlarges the concept of family to include everyone united in doing God's will.

Mary, far from being excluded by this teaching, is its greatest example. She is Jesus's mother by biology and his disciple by choice. At the Annunciation, she said, "Let it be done to me according to your word." She did the Father's will more completely than anyone. She belongs to Jesus's family in both senses.

Micah celebrates a God who "delights in mercy" and will "cast all our sins into the depths of the sea." This is the kind of family God creates: not a clan of the worthy, but a community of the forgiven, bound together by mercy and called to do the Father's will.

Living It

Treat a fellow believer as family today, not figuratively, but practically. What would you do for a sibling? Do that for a brother or sister in Christ. Share a meal, offer a ride, make the phone call you have been putting off.

Reflect on what it means to do the Father's will. It is not about perfection; it is about direction. Which way is your life pointing? Toward God's purposes, or toward your own? Small corrections of direction matter more than grand gestures.

If you feel isolated, remember: you have a family. The Church, however imperfect, is your brother, sister, and mother in Christ. You belong, not because you earned a place, but because Jesus made room.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you stretched out your hand and called us your family. Thank you for including us among your brothers and sisters, not because we are worthy, but because we seek the Father's will. Strengthen the bonds of love among your people, and help us treat one another as true family. Amen.
