You Give Them Something to Eat

Where We Are

We continue in Ordinary Time, and the Gospel of Matthew now turns from parables to wonders. Jesus has just heard that John the Baptist has been killed and withdraws to a lonely place to grieve. Yet the crowds follow, and today we read how he feeds more than five thousand of them. The prophet Isaiah issues the great invitation behind it, come to the water and eat without cost, and Paul proclaims that nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of Christ.

The Word

Isaiah calls out to all who hunger and thirst: come to the water, you who have no money; eat what is good and delight in rich fare. Why spend your wages on what fails to satisfy (Isaiah 55:2)?

In the Gospel, Jesus sees the vast crowd, is moved with compassion, and heals their sick. As evening falls the disciples want to send the people away, but Jesus says, "They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat." With five loaves and two fish he looks to heaven, blesses, breaks, and gives, and all are satisfied with twelve baskets left over (Matthew 14:20). Paul completes the picture: neither death nor life nor any power can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

Reflect

Jesus feeds the crowd out of his own grief. He had gone away to mourn a friend, and still, seeing the people, his first response is compassion. Sometimes the most generous love is given by those with the least left to give, who pour out anyway.

Notice that he does not simply produce bread from nothing. He says to the disciples, "You give them something to eat," and then works through their five loaves and two fish. God delights in taking the little we offer and making it more than enough. Our small contribution is not too small for him; it is exactly what he asks for.

There is a Eucharistic shape to the scene. He takes, blesses, breaks, and gives, the same fourfold action of every Mass. Isaiah's free banquet is fulfilled here and at every altar, where the hungry come without money and are fed with the Bread of Life. The deepest hunger in us was never really for food.

And Paul names what is finally being offered: a love nothing can sever. Hardship, fear, even death cannot pry us from the heart of Christ. The hands that broke the loaves for five thousand are the same hands stretched out on the cross, giving everything so that we would never go hungry for love again.

Living It

What hunger are you trying to feed this week with things that never quite satisfy, the next purchase, the next achievement, the next distraction? Isaiah's question is worth sitting with honestly: why spend so much on what leaves us empty? Bring that real hunger to the One who alone can fill it.

Then offer your five loaves. Do not wait until you have enough to make a difference; hand Jesus the little you have, an hour, a skill, a small kindness, and let him multiply it. Maybe this week that means feeding someone literally, or simply showing up for a person whose need feels bigger than your resources. Watch what he does with what you give.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, even in your own grief you had compassion on the hungry crowd and fed them until they were satisfied. Teach us to bring you our small loaves and trust you to multiply them. Feed the deepest hunger of our hearts at your table, and hold us close in the love from which nothing can ever separate us. Amen.
