Five Loaves and Two Fish

The feeding of the five thousand is the only miracle (besides the resurrection) recorded in all four Gospels. It is the sign that Jesus is the new Moses, providing bread in the wilderness. But it is also a lesson in how God works with inadequacy.

The disciples' response is eminently practical: "Send them away." They assess the situation, calculate the resources, and conclude there is not enough. They are right, by human math. Five loaves and two fish cannot feed five thousand men plus women and children. But Jesus does not ask them to solve the problem with their resources. He asks them to bring what they have.

This is the pattern of grace: bring what you have, however inadequate, and let God multiply it. The boy's lunch, in John's version, is laughably small. But placed in Jesus's hands, it becomes more than enough. Twelve baskets remain, one for each tribe of Israel, one for each apostle, abundance beyond the need.

Jesus's instruction, "You give them something to eat," is a commission, not a test. He is teaching the disciples that feeding the hungry is their responsibility, empowered by his blessing. The Church does not send people away to find nourishment elsewhere. The Church feeds, with whatever little it has, trusting that Christ will multiply.

The Eucharist echoes in every detail: he took, blessed, broke, and gave. The same four verbs will appear at the Last Supper. Every Mass reenacts this miracle.

What is your "five loaves and two fish" today? What small, inadequate offering do you have? Bring it to Jesus. Do not wait until you have enough. He multiplies what we surrender.

Do not "send people away" when they are hungry, whether for food, for attention, for love. Instead, offer what you have. It may not seem like enough, but in Christ's hands, it always is.

At your next meal, practice the four verbs: take, bless, break, give. Let every meal be a small Eucharist, a moment of gratitude and sharing.
